Wednesday, May 27

Entry for Wednesday, May 27

We have reached the midway point of the week as we enjoy the beauty of spring on this Wednesday morning.

Today in History

On this day in history, May 27, three world-renowned musicians were born.  Bruce Cockburn came into the world on May 27, 1945 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Bruce has spent his life writing songs that deal with social justice, in particular helping to fight for environmental awareness.  He is an incredible guitarist.

Neil Finn came into the world on May 27. 1958 in
Te Awamutu, New Zealand.

Neil was a member of the band "Split Enz" and, along with his brother, a founding member of the band "Crowded House".

Mike Hamer came into the world also on My 27, 1958, the exact same day as Neil Finn.  Mike was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada but grew up in Montreal before teaching in Canada's north then in Ottawa, the nation's capital.

Mike plays in many local Ottawa bands but his favourite passion is playing his guitar with his Grade Two students as well as with the St. Bernard Catholic School choir!

Mr. Hamer tells us that in the video he is playing guitar along with his dentist, his police officer friend and a fellow teaching colleague who is now retired.

Speaking of making music, Mrs. Blackmore and Mr. Hamer have always loved taking the St. Bernard Catholic School Choir to many local places to sing.  Here we are pictured in the lobby of the Chateau Laurier after performing for a huge luncheon of school board superintendents from across the province last school year.  (Conrad Black had just passed in front of the camera moments before the picture was snapped...hehehe!)

"Mr. Hamer...you're really funny!  We love reading the blog each day!" the three girls giggle.

Language Learning

Today we have two more fun fables to read by Aesop.
Check them out at the links below!

Your Reading Task

Mr. Hamer will give you three words today that you will have to include in a single sentence each.  They have to do with the two fables we read today.

Place each group of three words in a single sentence each.
Example from a different fable:

Ex.  crow, water, pitcher
When the crow dropped pebbles into the pitcher the level of the water began to rise.

                                   1.  wolf, hiding, lamb
                                   2. shepherd, bell, wolf
                                   3. mother, market, milkmaid
                                   4.  milk, thinking, pail

"Those fables sure are fun to read," this young lad says.

Math Learning

Mr. Hamer wants to show you the old dollar bills that he remembers were in use when he was a little boy in Grade 2.

One Dollar Bill.

Two Dollar Bill.

Five Dollar Bill.

Ten Dollar Bill.

20 Dollar Bill.

One Hundred Dollar Bill.

Check out this image of all of the bills together.
There is even a One Thousand Dollar Bill here!

She's telling him, "If we study hard and earn our grades, someday we'll have a solid job that will pay us good money!"

Your Math Task

Having a Budget
(only buying what you can afford)
This means that you can only buy the item that is worth less money than you have.  If the item costs more than the amount you have, you cannot buy it!

Look at the chart above.

1.  For each question write your budget (what your mom and dad allow you to spend)
2.  Then draw the picture of the item that your budget will allow you to afford to buy.  (Don't forget to add colour!)
3.  Also...don't forget to add the price tag to your picture!

"It is never too early to learn how to budget your money," he tells us in a mature voice.

Student Sharing

Mr. Hamer loves seeing the work sent in by the students...and what fabulous work it is.
I love these interview responses from our two fables.

The same young boy sent in this picture of displaying specific amounts of money!  Look great!
Thank you so much for sharing, K.B.

"I enjoy doing my blog work!" he indicates.

Once again, we end our posting today with a prayer...this one being for anyone on the planet celebrating a birthday.
Yes...we are all "Children of God!"
All the best, Mr. Hamer OCT
