Friday, May 8

Entry for Friday, May 8

Indeed, we have been sharing only positive vibes each day throughout Education Week!

Today is our final school day of Catholic Education Week.

Even though our theme for the week has been "Igniting Hope", let us hope that we continue to do so throughout all of the days of the year!

Yesterday, our message of hope was meant for those in need as well as those who care for the people in need.
Today we are asked to send ourselves a message of hope - for today and the future.

Mr. Hamer's message of hope to himself...

Dear Mr. Hamer, it is my hope that my wonderful students continue to excel with our "distance learning" lessons and are able to return to school when the time comes better prepared for the road ahead with new teachers in a new grade. I hope they remember the many fascinating things they learned in Grade Two.  May they grow up to be contributing citizens in society...making a positive difference in the lives they meet along the way.  Sincerely yours, Mr. Hamer

Indeed, we all have hope for our futures!

"We believe in ourselves, Mr. Hamer!" they say with a smile.

Did anyone see the Snowbirds fly in formation over Ottawa yesterday at 5:00 PM?  The squadron is made up of men and women pilots.

I was thrilled to learn that one of the pilots was a kindergarten classmate of my daughter's from here in Ottawa.  He grew up down the street from us.

Yes, you can be whatever you dream you want to be...if you put your mind to it added with good old-fashioned hard work!

Your Reading Task

On a sheet of paper create a new page for the story "Hope Is An Open Heart".  Draw a picture for the page and write a one sentence caption.  (A caption is the words found below a picture or beside a picture.)

Hope truly is an open heart!

"Hope is an Open Heart" was a lovely read-aloud, Mr. Hamer!
Mother's Day Art

As humans, we truly appreciate all that our mothers do for us.  Today we will have fun creating a card for our mothers as this Sunday is Mother's Day!

Look at some of the examples in the images below.  Feel free to copy one of them or create your own card.

Don't forget to tell your mom how much you love her and how much you appreciate all that she does for you!

Here are some examples that you may wish to copy.
Also, feel free to google hand-made mother's day cards and click on "images" for more ideas!

Math Learning

We will keep math short today as Mr. Hamer would like you to spend greater time devoted to making a lovely Mother's Day Card.

Mr. Hamer carefully drew these two circles and asked the question, which is more...1/2 or 2/3.

Clearly more the circle on the right is coloured than the one on the left...so...2/3 is "more than" 1/2.  I write...

2/3 > 1/2

If 2/3 is "more than" 1/2
then we could say
1/2 is "less than" 2/3  I write...

1/2 < 2/3

Yes, you can switch the place of the fractions...but you have to remember to switch the signs!

The same works with whole numbers.

8 is "more than" 7
so 7 is "less than" 9

8 > 7
7 < 8

Clearly more the bar on the left is coloured than the one on the right...so...3/5 is "more than" 1/2.  I write...

3/5 > 1/2
Let's switch the fractions around and switch the signs!
1/2 < 3/4

More the bar on the right is coloured than the one on the left...so...2/3 is "more than" 3/5.  I write...

2/3 > 3/5
so
3/5 < 2/3

Your Math Task

Your math task is to copy the equations below and then write the reverse equation below each one

                                          1.  10 > 6
                                          2.  8 < 12
                                          3.  1/2 < 3/4
                                          4.  7/8 > 1/3

Working hard in all of your subjects, like math, religion, language will offer you better chances of doing well in your future grades.  That is the Hope of your parents and teachers.

I love all of the "Fraction Action!" Mr. Hamer.

Today in History

On this date in history, May 8, 1945 the world celebrated the end of World War II.  This day is forever known as VE Day.
VE stands for Victory in Europe.

Our queen will deliver a televised address to the British nation in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of VE Day.

You can sense the true joy in the faces of the people when they heard the news that the war was over!  A truly special day indeed.  (The 2015 Guardian refers to a newspaper review of the day from five hears ago.)

Today, May 8, 2020 is also  "World Red Cross Day" around the world.

Isn't it fabulous that we celebrate the Red Cross during our time of Education Week...

...when the theme of Education Week is Hope!

The Red Cross is there all over the world to help out in times of disaster or emergency.  They arrived in Haiti shortly after the earthquake struck that country.  Remember our story, "Hope For Haiti" from the other day?

Their dedicated doctors, nurses, helpers, volunteers work tirelessly to support those in need.

Our school has supported the Red Cross at times over the years.

Indeed, with such kind people as those who are associated with the Red Cross, there will always be hope in our world!

The Red Cross is such a special and important organization, Mr. Hamer.  Thanks for telling us about it!

Student Sharing

Wow!  Four assignments in one picture.

Terrific!  Love that "greater than" and "less than" work as well!

A lovely prayer and wonderful syllable effort!

Great comparing of fractions!

Perfect!

Lovely adverb page, A.D.

Cool looking student work, Mr. Hamer!

A message directly from the Bible.

We end off this week with a "Thank You" prayer to your teachers.  Your teachers may be the ones you see in school or even your parents or older siblings at home.

As a student, always strive to dedicate yourself to your school work and to be a good student in school, a good friend to all your classmates and a good son or daughter to your parents at home.

Enjoy a well-deserved weekend break!
Mr. Hamer OCT
