Monday, May 25

Entry for Monday, May 25

Today in History

On this day in history, May 25, 1961...

...United States president, John F. Kennedy made a very important announcement to the citizens of America.

Yes, before the decade of the 1960's was finished, President Kennedy wanted to see an American astronaut walk on the moon.

Here he is before his speech checking out the "Friendship" capsule that John Glenn rode into space.

On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon.
Even though President Kennedy was no longer alive by then, his dream was fulfillied!

Neil Armstrong said these famous words as soon as his foot touched the surface of the moon, "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

What the people around the world heard was a little different... "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."  (The word "a" right before the word "man" wasn't heard very clearly.)

Neil Armstrong would not have been able to land on the moon if it weren't for the help of a young lady in her early 30's named Margaret Hamilton.  She led a team of colleagues who created the thousands of lines of computer code that allowed the mission to take place.

Margaret coined the term "software" to distinguish the code from the "hardware" which deals with the actual computer machines.  Margaret is still alive today at the spry age of 83!

It's amazing to think that we sent men to the moon with the aid of computers that used only thousands of lines of code...not millions like we typically use today.

Just think, the iphone people carry around in their pockets today has enough code to run 120 million missions to the moon!  Amazing!

In fact, many women, such as Mary Jackson pictured above, played important roles in the space missions.  Without their knowledge and skills, we would never have been able to send astronauts to the moon and return them home safely.

For the young girls in our class, you will be proud to know that many woman contributed to the space program as astronauts who flew into space...and still do.  Sally Ride is pictured above on one of her many missions to the space station which orbits the earth.

Our own Governor General, Julie Payette, has also traveled into space as a Canadian astronaut participating in two missions to the space station.

As Canadians we are also proud of our contribution to space science with the famous Canadarm which has proven itself to be very useful in so many ways!

Language Learning

Our next fable we will read is called "The Fox and the Crow."

You may also hear it referred to as "The Crow and the Fox" or "The Raven and the Fox."
Check out the two versions below.  They are very short.

Yes, do not trust people who flatter you all of the time as they may want something more from you!  Hehehe.

Our next fable is called "The Fox and the Grapes."

It is sometimes referred to as "The Fox and the Sour Grapes.
Check out these two short versions at the link below.

Yes, what a great moral.

Above is a page that you can practise reading with an adult if you would like!

Your Reading Task

Comprehension Questions

Answer the two questions below in a complete answer.
First print the question on one line and then answer it on the next.  Your answer could be a couple of sentences long.

#1.  How did the fox manage to get the crow to let go of the cheese?

#2  Why did the fox say that the grapes were sour when they really were very delicious?

Math Learning

We continue with our study of money.
On the bottom row we have a penny, nickel, quarter and dime.  On the top row we have a fifty cent piece, a toonie and a loonie.  Note how the loonie has a different bird on it!

The Canadian Mint is where our money is made.  The Mint often comes up with different versions of the many coins.

This is the Canadian Mint building in Ottawa.

I have been on a guided tour of the mint and it is fascinating to see how the coins are made!

Canada's only other mint is this modern looking building located in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

It looks beautiful at sunset!

Your Math Task

Your math task is an easy one today!

Show how to make 70 cents and 45 cents in three different ways.

***Be sure to have one of your ways show the quickest way to get to the amount with the fewest number of coins like Mr. Hamer did in his first line for 65 cents!***

Mme Pepe will be asking the class the question below during our Google Meet on Thursday morning.

Use the videos listed further below to practice and get ready for the meet.
