Week Five of School

Today was Orange Shirt Day.
(You may enlarge the image by clicking on it.)
(Click outside the image to return to the default look of the page.)

The teachers got in on the action.

We gathered in the front lobby before the school day began.

We snapped that first image you saw with us all wearing orange for such a great cause.

Monday was the 20th day of school.
(To view last week's posting, simply click on the link to the right of the page.)

It was also the final day of September.

Early in the day we gathered at carpet.

We read our morning message from Lilly, Mr. Hamer's puppy dog.

The children then posed for a picture of the entire class.

Looking great everyone.

Love the shirt.

Working in teams.

Working with Mr. Hamer.

We learned this morning that "Every Child Matters."

After hearing the story of a young girl who proudly wore her new orange shirt to her residential school and was ordered to remove it...

...the children learned how some children were not treated fairly in the past in Canada.

They felt great empathy for the little girl who wore her orange shirt that she had picked out with her grandmother.

They felt sad that many young children had to leave home to go to the residential schools and not see their parents for the entire year.

As the boys and girls were working...

...I asked them to say "cheese".

They certainly find joy in learning.

By the way, when you visit our school you will see this lovely display in the front lobby.

You may read this lovely message on this plaque.

These works of art...

...were produced last year...

...by some of our grade six pupils.

While these children have now graduated elementary school...

...and are now in junior high...

...their artwork lives on...

...at their former school.

We love the artifacts...

...found in the lobby.

Mrs. Hamer helped Mr. Hamer decorate our class with these lovely banners.

Indeed, we are back to school in a big way!

Our school is cool!

We arrive at school in a safe manner.

We have been blessed with mostly sunny weather so far this school year, but our lawns appreciate a little rain every now and then.

Here is one of our activities from Orange Shirt Day.  I snapped this image shortly after the children began their seatwork.

Mr. Hamer models the work to help foster greater creativity in the children.

Looking good!

Lovely orange background.

The spider plants on the window ledge are enjoying the sunshine!
Have a great evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

Before the children arrived the classroom this morning...

...Mr. Hamer had set out some more hot air balloons for the children to create...

...in order to dress up our classroom.

This young lad tells us that it is the 21st day of school.

So this young lass teaches us about ordinal numbers.

Yes, it is the first day of October.

The children have to read the numbers properly as the young lady points out different numbers from both the ordinal list and the regular listing.
(Mr. Hamer's puppy, Lilly, had already taught the class about compound words.  Ask your child what a compound word is!)

Then it was time...

...stuff our hot air balloons.

Looks like fun.

It is fun!

The children are hard at work.

Indeed, they love their school work.  Here they are colouring their newest song they learned called "On the School Bus".

More balloon stuffing.

More fun.

Say cheese!

Cool colours.

This lad found his name on a book and was so thrilled!

Friends.

Those hot air balloons will be flying!

Stuffies make good friends.

Then it was time to line up...

...and head to Mrs. Pilon's kindergarten class.

With Mr. Hamer and Mr. Guitar!

We're ready to sing!

Grade Two's and kinders gathered all together.

Lots of happy faces.

Lots of collaboration.

Sister act!

Our school line-up.

We  will use this formation for the year.

It will be the same formation the photographers ask for on photo day.

Looking good.

Great job class!

Yes, we are "Up, Up and Away" in our learning.

Colourful balloons...

...adorn our classroom wall.

Many patterns.

Many colour choices.

Up in the clouds.

A look back at Mr. Hamer's desk area.

Our classroom cupboard.

Adorned with word wall words.

It is a smart cupboard!
Have a lovely evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

We visited Ms. Brigitte's class.

The grade five students each assisted one of our grade two friends.

We worked on the chrome books.

Where we conducted our school climate survey.

It took a while to log everyone on to their computer.

Then it was time to read the questions and respond.

We appreciated their help.

When done, children were able to read with each other.

The older students acted as great mentors to our young ones.

Good reading.

Ditto!

Good listening and following along.

Thank you, Ms. Brigitte!

Back in class we got out the number cubes.

We learned a little bit about probability.

 Then it was agenda time.

The children are getting better at completing their agendas.

In math, the ruler aids in subtraction.

Aya is a valuable assistant in the classroom.

Great learning going on.

Great teamwork.

Happy children.

Good friends.

Our class is hard at work.

Mrs. Hamer brought in some more banners to hang in the room.

Happy children.

It's that season!

Mr. Hamer loves trains.

All seven banners in the room!
Have a wonderful evening everyone!  Mr. Hamer OCT

We worked on a spelling activity early this morning.

The children worked with rhyming words.

They had to fill in the blanks by inserting a list word in a specific sentence in order to make the sentence make sense.

Then they checked out the hot air balloons hovering on the wall.

They had fun trying to spot their own balloon!

A couple of looks out our classroom window...

...at recess time.

Later in the day we watched an instructional cartoon video on how children feel if they have had something stolen from them.

Little incidents of stealing are not uncommon in the primary grades...

...so a short video on the topic...

...helps to instill empathy in the children...

...for those who have lost a personal item.

Their total focus demonstrates just how serious the children took the matter.

I am very proud of them.

We learned how a child feels when something is taken from them...

...then we learned how they feel when it is returned and an apology is given.

Then, we were off to another kindergarten class to sing.

The kinders enjoyed hearing the lovely voices from our class.

We managed to get outside a little early for recess...

...which meant we could head over to the newly installed play structure...

...before the recess bell would ring...

...when we would have to exit the structure for the grade whose turn it was to be there.

Lots of smiles...

...and happy faces.

Lots of fun...

...and pure enjoyment.

Lots of acrobatics...

...and balancing.

Go Redblacks Go!

Yes, it was a tad chilly...

...but because we were active...

...we kept warm.

We love our new play structure.

Back in class we learned about animals.

The children were then given some "catch-up" time.

A lovely effort on our new song.

He loves to solve...

...Mr. Hamer's Rubic's Cube.

Another great job on our latest song...Sambalele!

Hey, let's check back to last week...

...to view some more pics...

...Mr. Hamer took when we went over to the park.

Three of Mr. Hamer's former students were our buddies for the event.

A cool structure.

A cool kid!

Great balancing!

She loves hanging out...

...on the web.

A wet lad.

Colourful suit!

Let's check back in on the class from another previous day.

Lovely butterfly art.

Lovely class book.

A handsome trio.

Indeed!

A cool quartet.

She loves books.

She loves drawing.

Mr. Lee!

Lovely work!
Have a great evening all.  Mr. Hamer OCT

Some more views from our trip to the learning commons.

Ms. Avila is showing the children some chapter books.

They listen attentively.

Some may be interested in reading books with chapters.

Levelled readers are perfect for the children as they may select books designated for their particular ability.

Comfortable seating.

In the pit.

Relaxed.

Nice book selection.

Ditto.

A trio of readers.

Lounge lizard.

He loves to read.

Book selecting is fun.

On task.

Four awesome readers.

Cool book!

More shots from back in class.

Artwork.

Looks like they are having fun!

Indeed they are!

Colourful artwork.

We love our room.

A Rubic's Cube genius.

Lovely quality work!
