Tuesday, May 12

Entry for Tuesday, May 12

These lovely flowers tell us that we will enjoy a Happy Tuesday of the week!

Today in History

On this day in history, May 12, 1870, Manitoba joined Canada.  Notice how the province of Manitoba is located in the center of the country!

Winnipeg is the capital city of Manitoba.

It is one of the most beautiful cities you could visit.

Just like Ottawa, Winnipeg has an outdoor skating rink that is very long.

It goes on for kilometres and kilometres.

In Winnipeg, they even have a hockey team named for the province!

The team is the "Manitoba Moose".

Ah, yes...they do have a hockey team named for the city of Winnipeg.  This team is in the NHL.

The team is named the "Winnipeg Jets."
Did you know Winnipeg is not only located in the geographical center of Canada...it is known as that city at the geographical center of the continent of North America!  It is!

Winnipeg is about halfway from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and about halfway between the southernmost and northernmost part of the continent.  (Think of all of those islands that stretch almost to the North Pole!)

This intersection in Winnipeg is known to be the coldest intersection in all of Canada when those winter storms blow hard.  It is the intersection of Portage and Main.
(I really like this old image from long ago!)

The citizens of Winnipeg love to celebrate whenever they get the chance.  Here we see 3,600 people dressed in red forming a lovely maple leaf right in the middle of the famous street intersection to help Canada celebrate its 150th birthday!

It would be fun to visit Manitoba someday, Mr. Hamer!

Language Learning

Seeing as Manitoba is part of Canada...

...how about we read the story "Good Night Canada" where we will see pictures from all across the country.

Manitoba is one of the "prairie" provinces so look for the page with the train tracks and the large grain elevators on the prairies and you'll know that you are near Manitoba!

This next read-aloud story takes you on an alphabetical journey across Canada!  Enjoy the ride!

Math Learning

Today we will look at similar fractions to the ones we studied yesterday when we identified Improper Fractions.

Today we will learn about:

Mixed Numbers or Mixed Numerals

mixed number is a whole number combined with a fraction.
In the image above, we see one whole square and 3/4 of a second square.
To write this as a mixed number we simply say
one whole + 3/4 = ?
1 + 3/4 = 1 3/4
We say "one and three fourths"
or "one and three quarters"
We write 1 3/4

(Yesterday we would have considered the picture above as the improper fraction of 7/4)

Check this image out.
7 bars are coloured and the shapes are divided into 3's
So our improper fraction is 7/3
Our mixed number would be:
2 whole shapes coloured and 1/3 of the last shape coloured
2 wholes and 1/3
2 and 1/3
2 1/3 is the mixed number

Look at the improper fraction on the right.
19 smaller squares are coloured and each shape is split into fourths...so 19/4 is the improper fraction.

To make the mixed number 4 full shapes are coloured and 3/4 of the last shape is coloured.
4 whole squares and 3/4 of a square
4 + 3/4
4 and 3/4
4 3/4  is the mixed number

We have 6 full shapes and 2/3 of the last one.
Simple:  6 + 2/3 = 6 and 2/3 = 6 2/3
Improper fraction is 20/3
Mixed Number is 6 2/3

The mixed number is 4 whole shapes and 1/2 left over
4 + 1/2
4 and 1/2
4 1/2 is the Mixed Number
(9/2 is the Improper Fraction)

If 8/4 is the improper fraction then 2 is the Whole Number
Notice that 8/4 is the same as 2 wholes
8/4 = 2
No Mixed Number here as there are no "leftover" parts

5/4 would be 1 whole shape and 1/4 of the other
1 and 1/4
1 1/4 is the mixed number

3 wholes and 3/4 of the last circle
Easy!
3 and 3/4
3 3/4

What mixed number do these two circles represent.
Simple!
1 whole circle and 1/2 of the other circle!
1 and 1/3
1 1/3

I whole and 5/8
1 and 5/8
1 5/8

Mixed Number?
2 5/8

3 5/8

1 4/6

3 full and 3/5?
Easy  3 and 3/5
3 3/5

Some more comparisons of mixed numbers with their improper fraction.
1 3/4

2 1/4
Next year in Grade Three you will learn a mathematical way to convert a mixed number to an improper fraction and vice versa!

Hey!  Here's our bars from yesterday.
I see 3 full bars and 3/5 of another.
I am confident that the mixed number is...
3 3/5

One full orange and half of another.
As an improper fraction, this would be "three halves" or 3/2

As a mixed number it is one full orange and half of another.
1 and 1/2
1 1/2

Two whole pizzas and 1/4 of another.
2 1/4 (again)

We know the answer to that question!
3 wholes and 2/3 of another
Why...that's 3 and 2/3 = 3 2/3

Mr. Hamer's drawing from yesterday showed 9/4.
How would we show the same drawing with a mixed number?
Simple!  2 whole shapes and 1/4 of another.
2 and 1/4
2 1/4

Your Math Task

Look back at your math work from yesterday when you drew the images above.  (You don't have to redraw them today!)
Simply print the "Mixed Number" somewhere near the "Improper Fraction" you wrote for the shapes yesterday!

Working with "Mixed Numbers" is actually quite easy, Mr. Hamer!

Student Sharing

Some great counting by 2's sent in from R.G.
I bet you are a great skip counter!

I don't thing I could have drawn these wonderful shapes as well this wonderful girl did!   Awesome improper fraction work, for sure!

And...such a great poem in the form of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear...only this time it is about another beautiful animal.

Bravo on two great pieces of work, M.S.

Lovely French and math work.  Yes...those greater than and less than signs always open their mouths to the bigger number or bigger fraction!

Another wonderful example of our "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" style of poem.  We love the sea and the compound words which can be made with the word "sea!"  Thanks for taking the time to share your work with us, C.C.

We leave you today with this lovely prayer for our students.  We also ask God to keep all of the patients with health issues in His care.  We hope that families will be able to visit loved one in nursing homes and be able to hug them once again.

Please enjoy a terrific Tuesday everyone!
