Entry for Tuesday, May 26

Today in History

On this day in history, May 26, 1805 explorers Lewis and Clark saw the Rocky Mountains for the first time.

They were on a long expedition to find the Pasific Ocean.

They were thrilled to spot the Rocky Mountains...but their trip was not over.

Six months later, Lewis and Clark reached their goal of finding the Pacific Ocean.  They could not have done so without the help of the native peoples they met en route.

At this spot on the Paciific coastline, this statue commemorates their great achievement.

Language Learning

The Fable called "The Dog and the Shadow" teaches us a lesson about being greedy.

When the dog sees his "reflection" in the water, it looks bigger to him, so he thinks that the dog in the water has a bigger bone than he does!
Enjoy the video of this fable.

You can also enjoy reading the version above with an adult for some oral reading practice.

Your Reading Task

You are a news person who must interview the characters in the two fables.
Write these question down and answer them how you think the animals would answer to you.

Interview With the Dog

Interviewer:  Why did you decide to let go of your piece of                           meat?
Dog:  (You put what you think the dog would say here.)

Interviewer:  What lesson did you learn?
Dog:  (You put what you think the dog would say here.)

Interview With the Ant
(The grasshopper was too weak to be interviewed!)

Interviewer:  Why did you say to the grasshopper when you                         were busy preparing for winter?
Ant:  (You put what you think the dog would say here.)

Interviewer:  What did the grasshopper say to you when                               winter finally came?
Ant:  (You put what you think the dog would say here.)

Math Learning

Your Math Task
Your math task is an easy one again today!

Show how to make $1.55, $2.70, $3.20 and $7.85 in two different ways.

***Be sure to have one of your ways show the quickest way to get to the amount with the fewest number of coins like Mr. Hamer did in his first line of the example for $1.35!***
