Entry for Tuesday, April 28
We don't say "Bah! It's Tuesday...grrrr!"
We say "Baa Baa, it's Tuesday, hurray!"
These cute...
...little lambs...
...come in all shapes, sizes, colours...
...and personalities!
Cute they are indeed!
Little lambs and sheep appear in many forms of art.
Why, we even...
...count sheep...
...when we can't fall asleep.
Hmmm, I wonder if sheep count "us" when they can't fall asleep?
Why the devotion to sheep in this blog entry?
Today in History
It's simple...because on this date in history, April 28, 2004, this woolly sheep was discovered hiding in a cave in New Zealand. They named him Shrek.
(I guess he didn't want to be shorn - have his wool shaved off - so he ran away! Big smile.)
Indeed, Shrek eluded capture for six whole years!
When they finally came to shave him, it is said that the wool he gave was enough to produce twenty men's suits! He was 10 years old at the time and lived another seven years. Quite the story, for sure!

Parents, sit and watch this wonderful video. It reminds us of the Good Shepherd during our Religious Studies.

That sheep video was so funny, Mr. Hamer
Math Learning
We continue with our unit on "Fractions".
Remember, the top number is called the numerator.
It tells us the part of the picture we are colouring or taking away or showcasing.
The bottom number of the fraction is called the denominator.
In our lessons yesterday we learned that it is the total number of sections the shape has been divided into that make it its whole shape.
All of these shapes above have been divided into 3 parts.
So, the denominator on the bottom is 3.
Each shape has only one shaded part.
Therefore, the numerator is 1 for the shaded section.
Two thirds means 2 of the 3 sections have been coloured.
This is interesting!
Three thirds means all 3 of the 3 sections have been coloured. The whole shape has been coloured.
So, we say that three-thirds (3/3) = one whole.
3/3 = 1

Your Math Task #1
In the chart above, look at all of the ways we can show 1/3.
On your own paper, draw the three shapes at the bottom of the page above.
Colour 1 of the 3 sections for each shape.
Underneath each shape, print 1/3.
Your Math Task #2
Now, draw three more shapes, any ones you wish and split them into thirds.
This time, colour two sections of each shape and print the fraction 2/3 below each shape.
Enjoy this read aloud where the "tails" are "turned"...if you know what I mean.

Wasn't that a fun story!
Rather than the sheep getting sheared, the sheepdog needed a haircut! Hehehe!
Long before Mr. Hamer was born his mom had owned an Old English Sheepdog similar to the ones pictured above!

Poetry
With the help of an adult, let's write our very own "Biopoem"
on any animal of your choosing.
Below is my example of a biopoem for a "Sheepdog"
I will be using the structure that is listed above and make mine ten lines long as well.
(If you wish to choose to shorten your poem to five or six lines, simply select the lines you want.)
Biopoem
Sheepdog
Patient, gentle, kind, furry
Shepherd to his flock
Cares deeply about his little lambs
Who feels nervous when a wolf is nearby
Who needs to protect his sheep no matter what
Who gives barks of anger to intruders
Who fears losing even one of his sheep
Who would like to see the little lambs grow up

Poetry is cooler than I thought it would be, Mr. Hamer!
We end our lessons today with this special prayer.
Take care everyone! Mr. Hamer OCT
