Thursday, April 9

Entry for Thursday, April 9

Today is Holy Thursday, the day Jesus celebrated His Last Supper.

It is a very special day in this holiest of weeks.

Holy Thursday is also known as Maundy Thursday.  On this day, Jesus gave the new commandment or mandate to love your neighbour as you love yourself.

On Holy Thursday we honour Jesus by learning the Stations of the Cross.  The beautiful video below takes children through the Stations of the Cross in a lovely way that young people will understand.

This next video takes children on a journey through the Holy Week and on into Easter as well as the important days following Easter Sunday.

Student Sharing

I get a thrill when families e-mail with images of their child's work.  Today we have three students sharing their work.
Remember...you can enlarge all of these shared images.  Simply click on them to do so.
Click outside the image to return to the default look of the page.

Mme Pepe will be happy with the spelling of Monday's and Tuesday's dates in French as done by one of the girls in our class.  She also shares with us the many shapes she has already learned!  Way to go!

Wow!  All parents will love this example of procedural writing..."How to Clean My Room."
Thanks for sharing your incredible work, A.D.

Our friend who also shared yesterday is back with some more great looking work.

He's drawn some terrific examples of various habitats...and...they are listed in ABC order!
Bravo!

Here are some super examples of 3D drawings clearly showcasing the faces, edges and vertices.  He's a master artist!    Thanks for showing us all of these great pictures R.H-F!

Yet another young classmate has sent along some fabulous images of her hard work.
She's got those faces, edges and vertices down like a pro...and the hearts tell us how she feels about math.  Lovely!

Here she is with her little brother!
Yes!  Yesterday's St. Bernard Spirit Day was PJ Day!

After reading MR. Ferris and His Wheel, she created her own invention.  Love it!
I would catch those flowers that the rocket shot out and save them for Mrs. Hamer!

Great writing!

What a valuable lesson your story teaches!  Super job, G.M.

Thanks to these three students who were willing to share their work with us today.  Keep those great pictures coming in and I will highlight your great work...everyone!  Big smile!

Pink Moon

Say, did you see the Pink Moon over the last few nights?

A "Pink Moon" isn't really pink.  It is called that because it is a "Full Moon" in the spring when the pink phlox ground flowers come out.

April's Pink Moon happens to be a "Supermoon" which occurs when the moon is closer to the earth than it normally is.  In fact we have been enjoying a series of "Supermoons" with three full moons in a row...March's Full Moon, April's Full Moon and May's upcoming Full Moon.  Of the three, April's Full Moon is the largest as it is the closest to earth.  Yes, it's fun looking up at the sky at night!

Today is the 100th day of this calendar year.
Normally, April 9th is the 99th day of the year but this year is a...???.

2020 happens to be a "leap year!".

Remember when we talked about leap years in class?
It takes the earth 365 and a quarter days to revolve around the sun.
This is the equivalent of one calendar year.
We save the extra quarter of a day four times (one time each year) which makes up another full day every four years.  Yes, this year we enjoyed a "leap day" on February 29th.

Today in History

On April 9th every year we honour the Canadian soldiers who sacrificed so much to create peace in our world.  In World War I many Canadian soldiers sacrificed so much in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

April 9th is when we commemorate Vimy Ridge Day.

The boots symbolize those brave Canadian casualties as seen in these two photographs.

Virtual Spirit Week at St. Bernard
Today is "Get Active Day."  Show us how you are staying healthy.   Do you go for walks, ride your bike (being sure to maintain physical distancing), do online yoga.  Post a picture of how you are staying healthy.

"We are being active!" they call out during our Terry Fox Run in the park.

Math Suggestion

The image above (click on it when you need to study it closely) offers a chart showing the faces, edges and vertices of eight solids.
Take note of a couple of items.
1.  A triangular based pyramid is called a tetrahedron.
2.  A sphere is considered to have one face and one edge but no vertices.
3.  The cone has two faces, one edge and one vertex.
4.  The cylinder has three faces, two edges and no vertices.

So...a curved surface is considered to be a face!
Where a curved face meets a flat face, there is an edge.  Cool!

Your Learning Task

Hey, as a review...sit with a family member and discuss the chart above.  See if the two of you can list the faces, edges and vertices of each object.

Try the same with this sheet.

Task #1
Pick any two solids and draw them in your notebook.  Beside each solid say how many faces, edges and vertices it has.

Task #2
Check out the image below of a structure made out of simple 3D shapes found around the house.  Try to come up with your own cool structure which incorporates various 3D shapes that you and your family can find.  (You may learn more about stacking shapes!)

Have an adult take an image of your structure and e-mail it to Mr. Hamer so that he can showcase next Tuesday when we return to "On-Line School" after the four day Easter Weekend break.

Language/Religion Suggestion

Read the Stations of the Cross in the image above.  Click on the image to make it bigger.
By reading the Stations of the Cross, you will appreciate the sacrifice Jesus made for us.

Your Learning Task

In your notebook write a short "Thank You" note to Jesus.  It could be two or three sentences long.  Let him know how much you feel about what He did for us.  Remember to begin with "Dear Jesus" and sign your name after writing the note.

I would like to take this moment to wish all of our families a lovely Easter weekend.

Stay safe and enjoy all the love your family has to offer!
Mr. Hamer OCT
