Friday, April 24

Entry for Friday, April 24

Everyone deserves a rose today for having worked so hard all week long with our distance learning.  And who better to deliver the rose than this little guy!

Today In History

Today we celebrate St. Vincent de Paul.
He was born on this day in 1581.

He was a French priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor.

Today we know him as the patron saint of all works of charity.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul works tirelessly even today in Ottawa and around the world serving the poorer people in our communities.  His compassion and love for others carries on!
Math Learning

Learning Task

Today we will read and solve eight division word problems.
Read the questions above carefully to determine your division equation.
Solve each problem and write a one-sentence answer for each one.

(Because the image is slightly blurry, I will offer clues for each question.)

                             A. 32 crayons...8 in a pack
                             B.  72 T-shirts....12 in a box (ask an adult for help on this one!)
                             C.  64 pieces of gum...8 in a pack
                             D.  35 golf balls...7 per box
                             E.  44 ounces of juice...11 ounces in each bottle (parent help here as well)
                             F.  30 pencils...10 to a pack
                             G.  21 golf balls...3 to a pack
                             H.  54 apples...a half dozen per box (parent helps here!)

Language Learning

...we are going to listen to a fun story called "The Snow Globe Family."
(Now that the snow is finally gone, this story will help remind us about the season we have just left behind...winter!)

Video of "Snow Globe Family" Read-Aloud

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUgUydkKUu8

Learning Task

1.  Take a piece of paper and draw your own snow globe with whichever items you would like to include inside your globe.

2.  Then, write a descriptive paragraph with the help of an adult about your own snow globe.
This will be our last descriptive writing activity because by now we are "pros" at doing it!

For today, use five sentences again and check with the hamburger chart to guide you.

Don't forget to include adjectives to describe the various items in your snow globe.  You may even wish to write about what happens inside your snow globe.

Have fun writing the paragraph and feel free to send your version to Mr. Hamer!

This example above talks about a visit to grandma's but it still gives you the idea about what a descriptive paragraph would have it in.

 Some ideas.

Another child's sample from the Internet only with shorter writing.
You can do the full fives sentences!  I know you can!
Remember your growth mindset while working on this activity!

"Say, Mr. Hamer...reading that snow globe story reminded us of the times we went outside to play on those big hills in the junior yard!"

Student Sharing

What a lovely image of one of our students working hard on her math.  Mom says that the use of the beans helps her visualize and problem solve when she gets stuck on a particular question.  Bravo!  Mom adds that the kinetic approach seems helps to reinforce the concept for her as well.  Thanks so much for sharing, G. V-P.

Love all six fact families plus some French to add to the page!

Super writing about Earth Day!

Still more fact family work.  Indeed, repetition of math tasks certainly helps to ensure understanding!

Very nice verb work...and French aussi!
I'm so proud of your effort, R. H-F.

We send ourselves off into the weekend with this short prayer thanking God for the wonderful week we have just experienced.
Have a safe weekend everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT
