Thursday, April 30

Entry for Thursday, April 30

Today in History

On this date in history,  April 30,1789...

...George Washington was inaugurated as the first President of the United States.
His inauguration took place in New York.  (Inaugurated means that he was "sworn in" as president in a formal ceremony.)

It is said that he was nervous delivering his speech.

Four years later he was re-elected as president.  This time the inauguration took place in the city of Philadelphia which was the capital city of the United States at that time.

George Washington is the only president in history to have been inaugurated in two different cities.

This entry in our blog begs the following question.
"When was our first prime minister inaugurated?"

This is Sir John A. Macdonald.

He was Canada's first Prime Minister.

There are many ministers in government but there is only "one" prime minister...just like a "prime number"."

This photo was taken in 1864, three years before the birth of Canada.
Many important politicians met in Charlottetown to discuss the formation of our new country.

On July 1, 1867, Canada was born.
This is why we celebrate Canada Day each year on July 1st.

Yes, July 1, 1867 is the date of birth for Canada and it is the date in history when our first Prime Minister took office.  Now you know the rest of the story!  Mr. Hamer

It's great to learn about our country's history, Mr. Hamer!

Math Learning

We continue with our fractions unit.

We are getting really good at identifying fractions.
Yes, 3/4 of that chocolate bar is eaten!
5/8 of those buttons are green.
1/6 of that circle is coloured.

We know how to write a fraction.
1/4 of the rectangle is coloured red.
That must mean that 3/4 remains white.

What part of the circle above is coloured green?
You're correct!  3/4 of the circle is green.
That means 1/4 of the circle is orange.

Your Math Task #1

Select two of the images for each fraction above.
Draw the two images you picked for each group.
Print the fraction you must colour below each image.
Then colour the shapes to match the fraction indicated.

Your Math Task #2

Select six of the above images.
Draw them on your paper and shade them just as they are shaded above.
Don't forget to print the fraction name either below the shape or beside the shape!

We are becoming fraction pros, Mr. Hamer!

Language Learning

Since our "Today In History" dealt with our first Prime Minister of Canada, I thought it would be fitting to read this "celebration of our country" story book.

A young little boy takes us along as he reads it himself!

Your Language Task

Since we have learned a little bit about Canada, why not create a poem about our country?
Ask an adult to help you with a little bit of research.
Let's call our poem "Canada Is..."

There is actually a song by this same title.
Check it out at the link below.

Mr. Hamer's "Canada Is..." poem

Canada Is...

Canada is...a special place
Canada is...wide and strong
Canada is...a friendly country
Canada is...a place to grow
Canada is...my home

I am so proud of my country, Mr. Hamer!

Student Sharing

News Bulletin...some more great work coming in from our students!  We love your Biopoem, M.S.

Very nice drawing and labeling of "Fractions of a Whole."

It's fun seeing student sharing, Mr. Hamer!

We close our day with this special prayer for Canada...even if today is not July 1, Canada Day.
Every day is Canada Day!
Mr. Hamer OCT
