Entry for Friday, May 1
What a special day today is!
It is "May Day!"
We always celebrate May Day on the first day in the month of May.
A wonderful celebratory tradition is to dress up and dance around the May Pole!
May Day is celebrated in many countries around the world as a traditional springtime festival or as an international day honouring workers.
(Remember how Mme Pepe asked us about traditions in our class meet yesterday!)
(Remember how Mme Pepe asked us about traditions in our class meet yesterday!)
Indeed, Happy May Day.
Note: Not to be confused with the SOS call of Mayday when someone is in trouble which comes from the French verb meaning to help...m'aider...help me...help me!
May Day activities look like so much fun, Mr. Hamer!
Math Learning

Fractions are everywhere!
Today we will integrate math with art.
Check out these cool "Fraction Flowers".
Notice how the center of the flower gives you a clue as to the fractions that will be on that flower's petals?
Why don't you try to make one or two "Fraction Flowers" similar to the ones showcased here!
That will be our math for today!
Combining math with art is too much fun, Mr. Hamer!
Language Learning
Being that it is May Day, we must observe an actual dance around the MayPole.
Watch carefully how the dancers intertwine themselves as the dance progresses.
Take note of how the ribbons wrap themselves around the MayPole nearer the end of the video.

Poetry
Today we will create an acrostic poem.
Let's print the month of "May" in a column like below.
M
A
Y
Then we use the letters in the month to start a sentence.
Poetry does not have to rhyme.
Check out Mr. Hamer's version.
His birthday is actually in this month of the year.

By now we really understand fractions.
We can write them in math form (4/7)
and in word form (four sevenths)
Fractions are fun!
Fractions are colourful.

My birthday is in the month of May.
All of the dancers move around the MayPole.
Yes, May is a wonderful month!
Your Language Task
Make your very own "Acrostic" poem for the month of May.
Then, select one more month in the year and make an acrostic poem for that month!
Here is Mr. Hamer's Acrostic poem for another month!
August is the eighth month of the year.
Usually it is very warm in this month.
Great things can be done by families at this time.
Under the August moon we can see at night.
Sometimes it feels like summer and sometimes not.
Terrific activities like camping can take place then.
Those Acrostic poems are really nice, Mr. Hamer!
