Tuesday, June 2

Entry for Tuesday, June 2

Is it really Friday already!  I thought not!

"Tuesday only?" the boys ponder.  "That's okay, because we love school any day of the week!"

Today in History

We celebrate the anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II as she was crowned Queen on this day in history, June 2, 1953.

When her father, King George VI died, a period of one year was observed before his daughter became Queen...a formality of respect.

The queen and her husband, Prince Philip wave to the crowd from their balcony at Buckingham Palace.

Elizabeth has been our queen for 67 years.  Some people think it is easy being the queen because she has so much riches...but her life is not easy.  She must attend many important functions almost everyday, giving speeches and meeting people with very few breaks in between.  She must present herself in an elegant style at all times.  Indeed, we rarely see the queen putting her feet up to relax!

"Elizabeth, our queen looks so pretty!" the girls all agree.

Video of Read Aloud for "Mrs. Spitzer's Garden"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dupeu7D5FxI

The flowers in Mrs. Spitzer's garden symbolize something.
Can you think of what they are symbols for?
Take a moment and try to figure it out.

Yes!  They symbolize you!

The flowers that Mrs. Spitzer cares for so deeply are a symbol of the students she loves and cares for!

What a lovely story to share, especially as we near the end of the school year!

Your Reading Task

If you were a teacher, what would your classroom look like?
What would you have the students do?  Would you offer up some read aloud time or sharing time?  What exciting lessons would you plan?  Where would you like to take your class on a field trip!  How would you celebrate "spirit days" with your students?

Write a short paragraph a few sentences long and answer many of the above questions and others that Mr. Hamer didn't even mention.  Don't forget to have your last sentence wrap up what your first sentence says!  Most of all...have fun.
Give it the title...

If I Were a Teacher

"I think everyone would have fun if we could be teachers like Mme Pepe and Mr. Hamer!" she smiles.

"Yes," he agrees, "we would design all kinds of cool lessons for the students in our classes!"

Math Learning

Yesterday we learned that algebra deals with the numbers and symbols in equations.

You were given some addition equations with one number missing and you had to figure out that missing number.

Today you will be given subtraction equations.
Check this out.

5 = 5
7 - 2 = 5
5 = 7 - 2

Notice how the numbers on both sides of the equals sign have to amount to 5.

Well... 5 is 5!
7 - 2 is also 5
5 is also 7 - 2

It works!

Let's try to figure out some missing numbers.

3 = 7 - __

I ask myself...what number would I add to 3 to get 7
Simple...4
...so...
3 = 7 - 4

Your Math Task

Copy and complete the 12 equations and draw the boxes for the unknown number.

Place the answer in the box that will make both sides of the equals sign come out to the same amount.

Mr. Hamer has already given you three answers as a helpful guide.

 "Learning algebra is almost as much fun as Christmas, Mr. Hamer!"  he announces.

"I agree with him!" he reiterates.

Student Sharing

Equivalent fractions coloured so nicely allow us to view the equivalent nature of the fraction easily!

A lovely hope prayer and work on syllables.
Let's see...there are three 1-syllable words in the list.
One is mentioned...can you spot the other two?

It's fun watching the < and > signs devour their numbers!

Some more lovely Hope work along with adverb sharing.
A lovely effort!

Love the < > work with fractions.  By drawing the fractions of the whole carefully, it is easy to tell which is more and which is less!

Also it is easy to determine which fractions are = !

I bet you will be an amazing mom when you grow up!

Wow!  What a lovely Hope poster!

Great looking math!

I love this version of the Brown Bear, Brown Bear style of poetry!  Fabulous work S.G-S.

 Here is some more great looking math work with algebra!
He answered all of the missing numbers correctly.  Bravo!

Yes, there is only one of each one of us and we are all so very special.  Your work is special too, K.B.

Here is a nice prayer to help us get through our day.
Have a terrific Tuesday everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT
