Yes, and keep that smile on all day long...

Pictures From Home

Note to Parents

Dear parents. For the final week of the blog, I ask you to e-mail Mr. Hamer photos of the students enjoying whatever it is they love doing be it indoors or outdoors.  This will be a nice memory for all of our classmates as they look back on the blog in future years.
Thank you in advance, Mr. Hamer

We have three wonderful images to kick off the week.
Keep those pictures rolling in!

This young classmate enjoys working in the garden with his nonno, brother and sister.  What a joyous three generational photo showcasing love in his family!

This young classmate loves to go on bike rides.  His mom tells us that he knows the neighbourhood now and when the family goes for walks he is their GPS and he brings them back home safely!  Such a loving son and brother!

Sometimes he takes a break from his ride under shady trees until he is ready to continue!

This Past Weekend in History Part 1

This past Saturday was June 20th.  Every June 20th we recognize World Refugee Day.

This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the situation of refugees throughout the world.

What does the word "refugee" mean?

A refugee is a person who must escape  their country immediately to seek safety in another place somewhere on earth.

Refugees leave because there may be a war taking place in their country.

There may be too much violence happening in their country.

Or...maybe they must escape because their family may not be respected for reasons of their race, the colour of their skin, their religion, or maybe their family's political opinion.

Sometimes a natural disaster may have occurred in their home country such as a flood or earthquake and they must escape for their lives.

For a refugee, there are so many feelings of sadness...missing their homes, their neighbours, their friends and sometimes their relatives who stayed behind.

Last year, for Refugee Day 2019, we were asked to "Take a Step" to be in solidarity with our refugee friends...to empathize what it feels like for them.

Oftentimes, refugees must walk many, many miles...sometimes 100's of miles to escape danger.

Refugees need our love, our help and our respect.

We are all children of the world.

We all deserve a safe place to live.

We are all one family.

We can make the world a better place by donating to the cause of refugees not just at Christmas time but often throughout the year.

We can make the world a better place by being kind to one another.

We can make the world a better place by thinking of the world as a great big puzzle where each child has a contribution to make in the big picture of things.

We can make the world a better place by offering to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

We can make the world a better place by working hard in school and get a good education.  Then, when we graduate we can go out into the world and make a huge difference.

We can make the world a better place by appreciating each other for what each one of us has to offer.

We can make the world a better place by being kind and gentle to those who are shy.  It starts with a smile.

We can make the world a better place by learning about how things work in order to improve them.  We learned at the museum that many people worked together as a team to create new things to improve the world.

We can make the world a better place by staying in touch with what is happening all around the world.

We can make the world a better place by saying a prayer each evening for others who may need our help.

We can make the world a better place by sharing our things with others.  In sharing we get to know the other person a little bit better and we get to appreciate them more.

We can make the world a better place by collaborating in small groups with others to create great works of art, science or really any other subject areas.

We can make the world a better place by becoming interested readers.  This will let us learn more about other places in the world and what they offer the world.

We can make the world a better place by having fun with friends...saying nice things to each other and playing within the spirit of the games we play.

We can make the world a better place by being organized in order to do more good things in a more efficient way.

We can make the world a better place by being thoughtful of the planet and its many regions like the oceans of the world.

We can make the world a better place by keeping our spaces clean, neat and tidy.  If we get rid of pollution then our planet will be healthier.

We can make the world a better place by learning other languages like French, Italian or even Spanish!

We can make the world a better place by listening to others and learning what they have to say.  Being a good listener is a very important part of friendship.

We can make the world a better place by appreciating where we came from and appreciating where we are now and dreaming nice thoughts about the future.

We can make the world a better place by telling our families how much we love them.  Take the time to tell your parents how much you appreciate all that they do for you.

This Past Weekend in History Part 2

Yesterday was Sunday, June 21st.  On this day in history, June 21, 1879, Frank W. Woolworth opened his first 5 and 10 Cent store.

Notice the sign indicating the name.  He had opened stores earlier than this date..but not 5 and 10 Cent stores.

Most people referred to the store as the "Five and Dime!"

Just like our Nickelodeon Theatre which we learned about last week, a nickel could buy you lots of things...and if you had a dime...even better!

Check out the interior of the store.  Lots of items piled high waiting to be purchased.

Every Woolworth's store had a cafeteria or "fountain" as it was often called.

The sign out front a Woolworth's store was always gold lettering against a red background.

Here's a fountain in another Woolworth's store.
Notice the red and white checkered floor.

Most often the floors were black and white tiles.

When I was a little boy your age, mom and dad would take me, my twin brother and sister into a Woolworth's store where dad would get us a treat while mom shopped.  Fond memories I have of these stores!

Today in History

It is believed that on this day in history, June 22nd, 1847 the first doughnut was invented.

A New England ship captain's mother named Elizabeth Gregory used to deep-fry dough rolling it in nutmeg, cinnamon and lemon rind.

She had a habit of placing hazelnuts or walnuts in the center where the dough might not cook right through...sort of as a disguise.  Because these were "nuts" sitting on "dough", the term "doughnut" came into existence.

But...the question remains...how did she get that hole in the middle leaving the ring shape left over along with a "doughnut hole" which many of us now refer to as a "Timbit"?
Legend has it that Elizabeth's son, the ship's captain squashed his doughnut over the pointed center of the ship's wheel...thus creating a hole in the middle.

Hmmm...legend or myth...we don't know...but I've gotta go and find me a doughnut shop right away!

Prayer For Fathers

We finish our posting with three prayers for fathers and a prayer for the last week of school.

Our hearts our with our fathers...and our mothers too.

The lessons we learn when we are young are carried through life.

Thank you to all of our fathers who dedicate so much time to us.  We love our dads!

A Glimpse of Canada

Today brings us out west to British Columbia...

...the province on the Pacific Ocean.  It appears orange on the map to the left.

British Columbia is a mountainous province...

...with many pristine lakes...

...that are amazing to visit.

The mountains tower above you...

...and you may even find waterfalls to wet your appetite.

Vancouver is the largest city in BC.

It has many spectacular buildings...

...and so many towering condominiums where people live.

Vancouver is situated directly on the Pacific Ocean...

...so you will see a lot of water in the inlets.

You will also see the mountains towering in behind.

Vancouver offers us spectacular views...

...no matter which direction you look...

...and no matter what time of day...or night.

This panorama showcases the city...

...in all its beauty.

You can take a gondola ride up Grouse Mountain...

...where you can ski in winter and see the city lights below.

There are even some great hiking trails including this one with a hanging bridge suspended over a large canyon between two mountains!

We head across the water to Victoria...

...the capital city of British Columbia...

...located on Vancouver Island.

Check out this beautiful railroad hotel...

...covered with ivy...

...and the legislative building overlooking the harbour.

Butchart Gardens in Victoria is a spectacular place to visit...

...especially at Christmas time!

Did you know that some people have floating houses?

Check out the float plane!

If you go to the west coast of the island...

...you can take some amazing float plane tours...

...at places like Tofino...

...located directly on the Pacific Ocean!
British Columbia, like all of Canada's provinces, is an amazing place to visit.
Tomorrow we head up north to the Yukon Territory!
