Entry for Thursday, June 18

"Year End Fun" for Mr. Hamer

The First Snow of the season is always exciting!

Sometimes it snows so much or there is too much ice on the roads and the school buses get cancelled.  That's when we have a "snow day" with only a handful of students making it into the school for the day.

We all remember the story of the birth of the Baby Jesus.

All of our families have family traditions that are very special.  Some are similar to other family's traditions and some families have unique ones!

The month of December is always a memorable one at school when the excitement builds for the Christmas Break.

When we returned to school in January we wrote all about our Christmas vacation.

Then we made some promises to ourselves for the New Year.

Mrs. Blackmore's class visited our clasroom as buddies one afternoon.  Mr. Hamer read the story "Hatie & Hudson" which was a heartwarming story that taught us that we should never judge others by their appearance alone.

This year we learned more things about nouns.

We watched a really old National Film Board film called "Paddle to the Sea" where we learned about the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River system.

January was a cool month in the school year.

100's Day is always thrilling at school.

As is Valentine's Day!

Not to forget Canada Flag Day.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday.  While we did not have to opportunity to celebrate Shrove Tuesday this (crazy) year, we did learn all about it!

Mrs. Hamer brought in many books on fish and their habitat.  Why, we even had a fishnet suspended from the ceiling of the classroom!

Our last day of school for the year where we actually attended St. Bernard's school building was the Friday before the March Break.  St. Patrick's Day is celebrated during the March Break.  Mr. Hamer's band had five performances lined up around Ottawa throughout the break.  We managed to get one in the week before the city shut down!

This is a very special page in our class book.  It is the last page in the book and normally the students all sign their names on each other's books.  Alas, Mr. Hamer had to sign all of the names across all 21 books seeing as we could not get back into school.  Yikes!  His hands were sore after that!

Once again, here is one of the twenty-one covers for our year-end class books that Mr. Hamer will deliver to your homes soon!

Today in History

On this day in history, June 18, 1942, Paul McCarney was born.  "Who is Paul McCartney?" you ask.

"Everyone knows who Paul McCartney is!" Mr. Hamer exclaims.

Paul was a member of The Beatles...a world famous rock and roll group from England.  Here we see Paul on the left with George, John and Ringo beside him as they step off an airplane to perform in America.

The Beatles were also known as "The Fab Four", John, Paul, George and Ringo!  That is John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

Paul played bass guitar and sang.
George played lead guitar and sang but not as often as Paul.
John played rhythm guitar and split the singing equally with Paul.
Ringo played the drums and rarely sang.
(Ringo's real first name is Richard, but the band members called him Ringo because he wore a lot of rings on his fingers!

The Beatles are so famous for their many amazing songs.  They became famous in some part because of their hair which was long for the time they came on the scene.

Ask your parents...better yet...ask your grandparents about the Beatles!  They will remember them for sure.

My older sister was lucky to have had the opportunity to see them in person when they played a concert in Montreal on September 8, 1964!

Language Learning

Here is a cute read-aloud about some really awful musicians who the king would rather get rid of.  It is fairy tail in nature.  Alas...the horse comes to the rescue!  Enjoy!

A Glimpse of Canada
Saskatchewan

We arrive in the province of Saskatchewan after crossing the border from Manitoba.

Saskatchewan is the rectangle shaped province in yellow on the map above.  It is the middle of the three prairie provinces.

In the prairies we see big blue skies!

Fluffy clouds...

...and fields and fields of crops.

Of course...

...there are the many grain elevators...

...that dot the landscape.

Most grain elevators are served by train.

We enter the capital city of Saskatchewan...Regina.

It is located on a body of water called Wascana Lake.
Wascana Creek flows into the lake.

As we have seen in all of our Canadian cities...

...Regina has some modern buildings and some older ones.

...Regina appears beautiful at night...

...as we have noticed with all of our Canadian cities.

The Saskatchewan Rough Riders are a well-known football team and they play in Regina.

Their stadium is called Mosaic Stadium.

Saskatoon is the other large city in Saskatchewan.

The South Saskatchewan River flows through Saskatoon...

...and a number of bridges cross the river.

The river meets up with...

...the North Saskatchewan River...

...which flows through Edmonton in Alberta.

Both rivers are really the same body of water and they originate in the Rocky Mountains.

 Saskatoon is lovely at night.

This special camera lens captures Saskatoon as evening turns to night time.
Tomorrow we will continue heading west where we will enter the province of Alberta!

Prayer For Our Musicians

Seeing as we focused on a famous musical band who brought much joy to many people, we end off our posting today with this lovely poem/prayer called "Musician's Prayer."
Have a day filled with melody and harmony everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT
