Entry for Tuesday, June 9

Today in History

On this day in history, June 9, 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River.

He met the local people.  Because he was the first European to sail this far up river he was able to lay claim to the territory on behalf of France.

Of course, we must all honour the fact that the aboriginal people were already here and were rightful owners of the land.

On June 9, 1869, Charles E. Hires sold his first root beer drink

This occurred in Philadelphia.  The drink is made from the root bark of the sassafras tree.

Mrs. Hamer prefers Root Beer...I prefer Coke!

"It's great learning about what happened a long time ago," she tells us from her elevated perch.

Language Learning

Yes, having a nice cool drink in the summer is what we all dream about as little children.  In the story "Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink" you will enjoy a zany tale about a little girl and her friend who have fun with their lemonade stand!

Your Language Task

Create a different drink with a different colour...perhaps..."Greenalicious and the Green Drink" or maybe "Redalicious and the Red Drink".  You choose any colour you desire.  Describe your drink in just a few sentences.  What food items went into it?  How does it make you feel when you drink it?  What does it make you want to do?  Will your friends love it...or leave it alone?  Draw a picture of your drink in either a glass or a large pitcher.
Have fun!

"When we get hot in the sun, we love to have a drink like Pinkalicious!" they shout with big smiles.

Math Learning

Today is our final day of Algebra.
You are becoming very good at figuring out what the missing number should be that goes in each box.
Note how Mr. Hamer placed a small red number up above each side of the equation to help him remember what each amount should be.  You can do the same if you wish or you simply can remember the total for each side of the = sign.
Remember, both sides have to work out to the same number!

Your Math Task

Copy and complete the sheet above.

"Learning algebra has been lots of fun!" they all observe.

Student Sharing

This wonderful student and her mom decided to play Bananagrams yesterday morning.  This was her word grid.  Phoenix was the first word she played from her stack of tiles.  She found the letters and spelled the word correctly all on her own.  Mom was so impressed!  She saw the word on a show she watches where they spoke about Phoenix, Arizona.  She came up with the words on her own and spelled them correctly.  Mom and daughter are having a lot of fun and mom tells us that she has a feeling her daughter will be an excellent Scrabble player too! Thanks for sharing G.V-P.

Some great looking money work coming in!

Every item has a price.

You need to save up enough in your budget in order to afford the items you wish to purchase.

We love those quotation marks!

A lovely poem about "There's Only One Me!"

"Seeing each other's work is a blast! they say all together.

Science (With No Work)

We learned yesterday that simple machines help to make work easier.
There are six simple machines.

The wheel and axle
The lever
The screw
The pulley
The inclined plane
The wedge

Let's check out the inclined plane today.
An inclined plane is basically a ramp that helps to make work a whole lot easier just as you can see in the images above.

Here are some more examples of inclined planes.

You may recall how Mr. Hamer told you that the wheel and axle was used to move the heavy stones to the area where the pyramids were being built.  Here we see the use of the inclined plane as a simple machine to help the men reach the higher areas that were being worked on.

You may also have noticed that the boulder are being pulled along on skids here.  Skids are like skis beneath the boulder.
If the men used logs in this case, the heavy boulders would probably roll back on them so the skid would help prevent that from occurring.

I bet you use inclined planes every day!

Yes, without simple machines, life would be tough!

"Working with simple machines helps us get things done faster and more efficiently!" they tell us.

A Glimpse of Canada
Newfoundland and Labrador

Today we begin our journey across Canada with a visit to Newfoundland and Labrador.  This province joined Canada in the year 1949.

Look to the right side of the map of Canada.  Newfoundland and Labrador is situated on the Atlantic Ocean.  This is one of the four maritime provinces.

In the spring when the icebergs "calf" from the glaciers in the north, they begin their journey south.  Here we see a red fishing boat dwarfed by an iceberg outside the mouth of the harbour entrance to St. John's.

Approximately 9/10 of the iceberg is below the water.

As we enter the capital city of St. John's we see many homes nestled along the sides of the cliffs.  This area is known as "The Battery".

Many of the residents of St. John's...

...enjoy painting their homes...

...in bright beautiful colours.

This past winter...

...St. John's was hit with a huge blizzard which shut down the city for many days.

You will find many lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador.

These waterways that come far inland with high cliffs on either side are called fjords.

Some fjords have towns and villages nestled in among their side walls.

Many people like to hike the fjords.

Back in St. John's...

...you may find many vessels...

...including these large, ocean going cruise ships.

Another look at the head of St. John's harbour.

Check out the iceberg floating by in the distance.  The large hill on the left is called Signal Hill.

It is from atop Signal Hill that Marconi received the first wireless message from all the way across the ocean in 1901.

Newfoundland and Labrador has many outport villages.

They are very scenic...

...and most of the residents rely on the ocean for their jobs.
We hope you enjoyed your tour of the amazing province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  Check in tomorrow when we will visit another maritime province on our grand tour of Canada.

Prayer of the Day

Sometimes we may need God's help to get us through each day.
Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT
