Entry for Wednesday, June 24

Student Sharing

Our lovely classmate has found some time to tour around Ottawa.  Here she is at the Rockcliffe Lookout overlooking the Ottawa River.

Feeding the geese in the Rideau River.  They took the food right out of her hand!

The slip and slide her family set up right in their backyard.
Looks like a ton of fun!

She and her family ninja'd some people.  They brought strangers some surprise gifts and left them right on their doorstep!

Her family walked by Dow's Lake to visit the tulips.

Enjoying a quick ice cream snack!
Thanks for sharing these amazing images S.G-S.
We'll post more of yours in tomorrow's final blog entry for the school year!

Another young lady from our class was enjoying the summer fun in Grandma's and Grandpa's backyard pool.

Such a great way to keep cool in the heat of the summer!
Thanks for these two pictures C.C.

Today in History

Today in history, June 24th, 1986, the Empire State Building in New York City was designated an American National Historic Monument.

It is located in the mid-town Manhatten area of the city.

The Empire State Building was built over a two-year period between 1930 and 1931.

It stood as the world's tallest building from 1931 until 1970.

There is a viewing lounge near the top of the building.

Here we see the building under construction.  It is named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

This iconic image shows eleven workers enjoying their lunch on a metal beam way up high in the sky.  I would be too afraid to do what they are doing!  They sure are brave!

Also on this day in history, June 24, 2010, Australia elected its first female prime minister.  Her name is Julia Guillard.

Girls, this proves that not only men can become the leaders of countries...women can as well.   Did you know that Canada has had a woman prime minister?

Kim Campbell was our first female Canadian Prime Minister and she was sworn into office on June 25, 1993.  (That was 27 years ago tomorrow!)  She was Canada's 19th PM.

Judging by the medals she is wearing it looks like she has visited the Governor General at Rideau Hall.

If I Were the Prime Minister of Canada
(Made up from Mr. Hamer's crazy imagination!)

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child in Canada would have enough art supplies to express themselves freely.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child's voice would be heard, even the shiest of children.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child would have an amazing birthday experience like the one I enjoyed recently.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child would have access to their favourite sports and leisure activities in order to stay fit and healthy.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child could afford to buy some of their favourite toys that they like to play with and share with their friends.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that books for children wouldn't be too expensive so that every child could build a nice personal library of their favourite book titles.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that museums would be free for all children under the age of 18 and that adults wouldn't have to spend too much to take us there.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that children from households where other languages are spoken are given lots of good lessons for them to become good readers in English and French.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child could live in a wonderful family like my family where they feel loved no matter what.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child would be given all of the opportunity to stay in school right up to college and university without having to pay big amounts of money.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that all of the new Canadians to our country would feel so welcome each and every day.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every child would be free to express their thoughts and feelings without any conditions, just like a hot-air balloon is free to rise up into the sky.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that any child who wants to get any job of their dreams, be it a doctor, teacher, architect, engineer, will be able to realize their dreams through a strong education.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that our oceans. lakes and rivers would be cleaned up so that young children can swim safely without fear of pollution.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every Canadian young person would get the opportunity to travel anywhere in the country in an affordable manner.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make it easy for young people to write about their passion and be able to become authors showcasing the amazing things Canadians do.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every kid growing up in Canada feels happy, safe and loved just like I do.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would encourage all of the young pupils to take an interest in people from all walks of life to help make our country be one big family.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that all pets find proper homes so they feel wanted and loved all across the country.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure young people have the right to express their opinions in a way that their voice is heard.

If were the Prime Minister of Canada...

I would make sure that every family in the whole country feels proud to live in the community they do and that there is enough money for all of the communities to prosper.

A Glimpse of Canada

We arrive in the Northwest Territories.

It is the large green area at the top of the map.

If you visit the Northwest Territories...

...chances are very good...

...that you may experience...

...one of nature's...

...most beautiful displays.

These images are of the Northern Lights...

...also known as Aurora Borealis.

Nature is so amazing!

This picture was taken in the capital city of Yellowknife.
(Mr. Hamer frequently saw the northern lights when he taught in Northern Canada for eight years.

Yellowknife got its name from...

...a Dene band who used to live in the area many years before.

The Dene band was called the "Yellowknives" and they used to make their knives from copper which has a yellowish colour to it.

Houseboat Bay offers up these great homes to live in...

...right on the water.

Yes, some people choose to live in a floating home!  Imagine that, will you!  (Big smile!)

Many of the homes in Yellowknife are built right into the hillside.  (Remember when Khloe showed us some great pictures of her aunt's house who lives in Yellowknife!)

Small bush planes can be spotted in the north.

There is a lot of wildlife to be seen in the NWT such as this regal looking caribou.  (I wonder if he knows that his face appears on our 25 cent quarter?)

How about a moose...

...or two!

Or...maybe three musk oxen!
Yes, what a great place to visit.
Tomorrow on our last day of school we will cross over to our newest territory called Nunavut!

Prayer of the Day

We end off today with a lovely, short prayer for summer.

Let's always remember the prayers Jesus taught us.
Have a blessed day everyone!
Mr. Hamer OCT
