Today in History

On this day in history, June 19, 1905, the first Nickelodeon opened.

A Nickelodeon is a theatre where the public could go to watch films.

Here is the inside of the first Nickelodeon Theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Here the interior of a later Nickelodeon...a little bit more fancy I would say!

The theatre was given the term "Nickelodeon" simply because it cost "5 cents"...yes, one "nickel" to gain admission to the film.  The Greek word "odeon" means theatre.

As you can see from these period images, many people lined up to go to the films.  They were very popular as no one had ever seen them before.

The early films at Nickelodeons were "silent films" without sound, mot lasting about 15 minutes or so.  Sometimes a live band played music as the film moved along.

The big sign outside the theatre is called the "marquee".
It is where the actors get to "see their name lights!"

The various short films were changed daily to offer variety to the public.

Grandiose signs signaled the public to come to the movies.
Sometimes, the live bands would play popular songs from their time between movies.

Here are a couple of coloured images of marquees from other cities.   They look very beautiful lit up at night.

The name of the film company is often advertised in the marquee as well.

In case you are wondering what the first ever film to be shown in a Nickelodeon...it was this film..."The Great Train Robbery".

Wow!  These two would love to star in the movies.

Only five cents to see a movie!

I can't wait to check out!

We'll all be movie stars!

Language Learning

Check out this fun read-aloud about what happens when you take a mouse to the movies...or, in the old days...the Nickelodeon Theatre!

Below is a fun listing of books for children that have been made into movies.

Have you read some of the books listed above?

Or...have you seen some of the movies made from these books above?

What about this selection?

Yes, some of these posters may just repeat themselves.

Mr. Hamer has always wondered...is it better to read the book first or is it better to watch the movie first?
It's a question where your response may very well differ from theme to theme!

Reading books is as much fun as playing outside!

Library fun!

Role playing a story they read in a book with make-up props!

Happy Father's Day

Yes, this coming Sunday is Father's Day.
Below are a few ideas for crafts and cards children can make for their dads.  These are but a few of many.  Simply google Father's Day crafts to find many more!

While I have lost my dad, I am not sad.   know he is in heaven and beside me every day!  Mom too!
So...Happy Father's Day to our dads out there!

A Glimpse of Canada

Our next stop on our cross-Canada tour is Alberta.

It is the westernmost prairie province.

Before we reach the Rockies, we arrive at the foothills.  They are the shorter, rounded hills as apposed to the tall snow covered peaks.

In fact, the shorter, rounded hills are much older than the pointed peaks of the Rockies.  They are rounder because the wind, rain and other elements have eroded them (worn them) down over millions of years.

Welcome to Alberta, indeed!

Beautiful crystal blue lakes can be found...

...high up in the mountains.

If you enjoy hiking, you can hike up to many of the lakes.

The trains travel through the countryside.

It must have been a lot of hard work to lay the railroad lines through this part of the country!

The passenger trains in the two pictures above are tour trains that allow you to see the wonderful scenery in the mountains.

Calgary is one of the two largest cities in Alberta.

The Saddledome to the left is an interesting building.

It's the hockey rink for the Calgary Flames and it is in the shape of a saddle because people out west love to ride horses.

Calgary also has its own tower...

...just like Toronto...only shorter.

You can walk around the top of the tower while staying indoors.

This skyline view shows the Rocky Mountains off in the distance.

A lovely night time shot with a "Super Moon" shows off the city beautifully!

This other night shot shows how the colours on the tower can change over time.

We head north from Calgary and arrive in Edmonton.

Edmonton is the provincial capital.

As you can see, it gets very cold in winter.

The North Saskatchewan River flows through Edmonton.
(Remember, it joined up with the South Saskatchewan River in Saskatoon!)

As always, there are some very interesting buildings here as well.

The river is a place to visit in the summer time.

Interesting looking structures.

The river bends through the city.

With this night shot, we say farewell to Alberta.
Next week we reach the westernmost province of British Columbia.  See you there!

Prayer For the Day

Mr. Hamer wishes to share this rhyming prayer with you all as we close out the week.  One more week of school to go!
Have an amazing day everyone!  Mr. Hamer
